Can Santa Claus Reach Beyond Commercial Hype and Raise Money for Children in Need With Letters From the North Pole?

Laurie Wajda asked:

Every year it seems the Christmas Holiday comes earlier and earlier.  Children start telling their parents in August what they want from Santa, decorations go up before the candy is off the shelves for Halloween, and merchants display their Christmas wares as early as September, hoping to catch the eye of early shoppers.  Each year the Holiday gets more and more commercial.

Parents shop for three months, watch Christmas built up from August to December in the malls, and then on Christmas day paper flies and the excitement is over in ten minutes…This year, perhaps we can utilize the icon of Santa to propel past the hype and commercialism.  We can use him to make our own children happy, yet add a touch of sunshine to another child’s life as well?

This year, Santa has announced his donations to Al’s Angels, an organization whose mission is providing moments of joy and comfort to families that are challenged by domestic violence, rare blood diseases, childhood cancer, and AIDS. Along with an amazing group of volunteers who show tremendous generosity, Santa remembers thousands of children in need.

Santa uses his letters to let parents tell their children, through him, how proud they are for their accomplishments of the previous year, thereby benefiting the sender, the receiver, and an organization that strives to make the lives of children and their families a little bit better.

All year long, kids do some pretty amazing things. So many parents are proud of their children, and many times that goes left unsaid. Of course it’s not intentional, sometimes a busy lifestyle just gets in the way. But a little praise can work wonders. Even for the little things that possibly no one else notices…  letters from Santa keep the magic of Santa alive, give the receiver’s self esteem a little boost, and also help other children through an organization formed to do just that.  It is the perfect mix to help Santa cut through that commercial hype and give a bit of meaning back during the build up of the Christmas holiday.

So, in this spirit, in the words of Francis Church “Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no VIRGINIAS. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. … The eternal light which childhood fills the world would be extinguished…No Santa Claus! Thank GOD! He lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.”  Yes, Virginia, Santa Claus lives…”  and he lives beyond the malls, the Holiday hype and the dressed up windowpanes.Ah yes, he lives…
